Client Tips: Engagement Sessions
Engagement sessions are so much fun, but for the uninitiated they can be a little overwhelming. For many people, it’s the first time they’ve ever been in front of the camera. To help you avoid those first time nerves, I’ve put together a bit of a guide below.
So what is an engagement session?
An engagement portraiture session is an opportunity for couples to celebrate their engagement and to capture photographically this very special moment in your lives. I personally love engagement sessions – they’re a great chance for us to get to know each other before the wedding and they’re stress free. There are no schedules or white wedding dresses for you to worry about messing up. If there’s bad weather, we can change the date. We can just hang out and relax. Oh, and you get to practise your moves in front of the camera!
Where should we go?
Anywhere you want! I always ask couples if there is somewhere special or meaningful to them. Is there somewhere that you both love to hang out? For example, is there a park that you both like to take your dogs at the weekend? If you both love to read, is there a favourite bookstore that you frequent? Perhaps you might want to revisit the place where you had your first date or where you became engaged.
Lacey and Chas’ engagement session was photographed at Chas’ grandparents’ property, which held many special memories for him.
Erin decided to have her engagement session with Michael in her neighbour’s field, where she used to play hide and seek as a child.
Otherwise, anywhere that looks picturesque will always do the trick! I do recommend, however, that your engagement shoot is held in a location different to the look and feel of your wedding/reception venue. For example, if you were having a city wedding, an engagement shoot in a country field would look make a nice contrast. If you’re not sure where you would like to go, I am always happy to make some suggestions. There are some great locations in Brisbane and beyond.
What do I wear?
I always recommend that you wear something that makes you feel comfortable, confident and most importantly, amazing! If you feel fantastic, it will shine through in the photos. For some couples, this is the first time they have ever been photographed professionally, so definitely make the most of it!
Yes, girls – this is permission for you to buy that cute little dress you’ve been eyeing off at the shops or that rad pair of fuchsia heels (I do like to take pictures of shoes, so be warned!). You are most welcome to bring multiple outfits if you wish. I also recommend that you wear make-up to your shoot. As I shoot in natural light, it will ensure your complexion is nice and even. If you are considering getting your make-up done professionally, it’s a great opportunity to get a trial run before your wedding.
As a couple, it’s best to consult with one another before the shoot. Ensure that you are wearing outfits that are complimentary and you aren’t wearing clashing colours or patterns.
Can I bring anything?
Yes, of course! If you feel there are props that might enhance the shoot – go for it! If you want a picnic themed engagement shoot, please feel welcome to bring a rug and a nice packed lunch. If you are both avid rugby fans, bring your rugby jumpers. It’s totally up to you.
